Spring is just around the corner. If history teaches us anything about the future you can bet on more music, more shows, more merchandise, and new surprises from Descention. (we’re a warm weather band..)

Filming for our first music video “TEN” is complete. The editing has begun. The results will present themselves right here on Descention.com .

Our friends over at www.FOAMCD.com have some more great plans in the works. They have some major ad time this next week in Orange County. They’re running an ad in OC Weekly, which actually hits news stands today. Also, they're running 20 spots on MTV, between 4 p.m. and midnight. Each day they have at least one guaranteed spot on TRL. If anybody catches that on Tivo, email it over and we’ll post it locally here on Descention.com.
Thank for all the support and emails we’ve gotten lately. We apologize that things have been a little slow and promise that some good things soon coming.

We’ve had some really great shows and successes with our new EP Ten-ative. Film genius, Sebastian, is deep into the production of our first video. The song: Ten. We’ll never rush an artist (right now, bazil is laughing) so we’ll not announce a release date just yet.
Things are really changing on the Descention home front! Adam Gray and his wife, Mary are expecting their first child any day now! We’ll finally be able to solve the question of whose child it is. (From the ultrasound it didn’t look anything like Adam….=)
Will Crozier and his wife, Kerri, have moved to the DFW area in Texas. His trading business has become very successful and required room to grow. Don’t worry, he’s already scoped out the flights from DFW to SLC and there are plenty of cheap, direct flights so Descention will, of course, continue to ROCK!
Cammie Crozier continues to put herself through miserable relationships for the sake of songwring. What a trooper. One recent poll on the message board has Cammie’s fans asking for at least 3 break ups per week. Mary asks you all to go easy on her.
We’ll be taking several months off to adjust to some of these events. Adam has got only a few weeks to teach his new boy how to play the drums. Will has to finish counting his money. Cammie has a few open days in her schedule next spring to take a break from her hectic dating agenda.
We’ll probably see a few less shows due to distance, but a lot more recording, due to the inspiration that comes with new stations in life.
Thanks for all the love, support, and help that everybody gives. Descention has evolved from being just a band, to becoming a family, blood or not….

We survived the studio once again. Our summer EP "TEN-ative" is complete! It is nothing like what we ever expected, and it's all that we could have ever hoped for! Will was finally able to scratch the electronica itch that's been drving him mad for so long, and Cammie got to take it down a few notches to let the heartfelt melody fly. All in all, we feel it's an excellent sophomoric effort, capturing new sounds and ideas, while staying true to BiPolar and Descention's trademark sounds.
With school back in, show season is ramping up. We'll be looking for some good shows to play. We're all signed up and ready to go on FOAM Production's CD sampler. Shouldn't be long before a larger audience can appreciate some of the finer things in life. (Any Wet??) We'll let you know how you can get a copy when it's released!

Searching for an upgrade.
We hate to be high school drama queens--we learned our lesson from Mean Girls--so a short explanation will have to suffice. After some major conflicts of morality, values, honesty, and an extremely unhealthy obsession with one lamaze coach, it became apparent that we needed to say "sayonara" to drummer cory jones. we wish luck to the guy, hope he somehow finds happiness in his so called new life, and we move on to GREENER pastures. SO. any kickin' drummers looking for an established alternative rock band...give us an email.
Let Us All Press On
Despite all the troubles on the homefront, we have continued to work our lil' hineys off! In late April, we made our personal radio debut, doing a two hour interview for Snow College's The KAGE. Cammie played "Spiders and Needles" acoustically, most of the album was aired for the land of Ephraimites, and we answered the burning questions of the public.
Focusing on our studio skills, we have been working on some projects with tv/movie placement. We've also been contacted by Orange County Rock Doctor, Steve Sturgeon of FOAM Productions. He has asked us to lend a hand in keeping ‘hip hop’ at bay by including one of our Bipolar songs on an underground music compilation album. We'll have more details soon.
We are still discussing a summer EP (if we can't find a drummer by then, guitarist Will Crozier would simply have to unveil his hidden talent as the best drummer this side of a 1/2 pound bean and cheese burrito).
Until then, we'll be looking to play some more rockin' shows to appease the masses. Thanks for your patience, loyalty, and support.

February 16, 2004

Now that the holidays are out of the way and school has settled into a painful routine, Descention has started booking shows again. Please check out the show section so you can find out where to see us perform.
We've got all kinds of ideas in store for the upcoming months! We've been toying with the idea of getting back into the studio this summer to record a 3-5 song EP. One of the songs that would for sure be on the disc would be the song TEN, which we've begun playing at our shows. We've also got some ideas in the works for a music video or two. One of which may be a major project with "Band Artist" (yeah, we'd like to think so....) Bazil. We loved his artwork for BiPolar so much we're trying to get something going again. For more of his work check out www.rakina.com (also located in our links page)
We're still receiving great radio play on SLC's KXRK x96, 96.3FM. That means that Question, Indigo, and Tamed have seen their play lists. X96's DJ Brandie continues to give us great comments before playing our songs.
Keep checking back for future updates and be sure to join our Message Board!

CD Review: Descention’s “Bipolar”

Descention’s debut album, “Bipolar”, was released August 7, 2003. This Provo-based group runs the gambit of dark alternative, with a healthy dose of distorted guitars and eerie echoes. Reminiscent of Ethan Finley’s old act, Two Lost Souls, “Bipolar” is a refreshing respite from today’s glut of commercial pop.

Most of the songs on the album are admittedly about lost loves. Creative song titles such as “Indigo” and “Your Hell” mask a number of songs in a shroud of artistic ambiguity. The lyrics are vague enough, yet at the same time specific enough to invoke powerful, personal emotions in listener. The power chords and heavy distortion add to the effect of lamentation for love lost.

Even though it is primarily heavy, primarily loud, and primarily about past relationships, this CD truly is “Bipolar”. Two of the album’s songs, “Joseph” and “Question” are draw inspiration from the spiritual side of life. Even in some of the heavier songs, acoustic guitars and piano lines are heard on a regular basis. The variety is there, and depending on your mood, your favorite song may well change every time you listen to the CD. Whether hammering out dark lamentations or upbeat, optimistic rifts, Descention’s debut record, “Bipolar”, is a fine sample of local music and local musicians offering us a sanctuary from the repetitive radio jingles that so many of us grow tired of.

A Night Out With Descention

After another successful show at Muse Music in Provo, I sat down backstage with Descention, one of the bands playing the Utah County scene right now. Descention is largely a family affair. Vocalist/songwriter Cammie Crozier, guitarist Will Crozier, and part-time keyboardist Mary Gray are siblings. Mary’s husband, Adam Gray, plays bass. Cory Jones, the drummer, is an old friend.

Such a collection of close friends and family makes for a great chemistry while onstage. It also made for a fun, relaxed, and sometimes hilarious interview. We were interrupted several times by friends and well-wishers stopping by for a visit, and more often by laughter as these talented musicians spoke their mind about music, ex’s, and the world in general.

Brian: How long have you guys been together?
Cammie: Two years
Brian: Did you start out here in Provo or did you transplant from somewhere else?
Cammie - Will and I have been playing since we were little, since we’re brother and sister. Then we picked up Cory in high school and then Adam, we met him out of Orange County.
Brian: What would you consider your genre to be?
Will: I would say darker alternative
Brian: And who are your main influences?
Cammie: Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. (laughter). People say we kinda sound like Evenescence every once in a while.
Brian: You guys just finished your new CD, “Bipolar”. How long have you been working on it?
Will: We were actually in the studio for about a month and a half...
Cammie:
“Studio” is all day, every day, like twelve hours…
Will - Twelve, even longer, sometimes fifteen hours, for a month and a half. But we’ve been putting the songs together and planning the album for like two years.
Brian: And where did you record?
Will - Southzone Studios; Engineer Rich Stofleth.
Brian: Cammie, as the principal songwriter, can you describe for me a couple of the songs, the different things found on the CD?
Cammie: They’re pretty dark and heavy, most of them. But the album’s name is “Bipolar” because half of them are really dark, and the other half are really light and happy. So it’s a variety, everybody can find something.
Brian: What are the clubs that you’ve played locally?
Cammie: Muse Music is the only one in Provo. We’ve played at places in Idaho, and Cali, and some in Missouri, ‘cause that’s where I’m from.
Brian: What other local bands are you familiar with?
Cammie: Sweethaven, who we played with tonight, are cool. Sugarland Run, they’re awesome too.
Brian: Adam, you’re a Utah transplant, right?
Adam: Yeah, the rest of the band moved out here to Utah and I was going to the Y. They needed somebody to play bass, and I was like, “Sure, I’ll try to play.” And they liked me!!
Brian: They’re keeping you around. Permanently! (Laugher, as Adam looks over at his wife) What do you think of the music scene here?
Adam: In Provo it’s kinda hard for little bands. But we have done Battle of the Bands at BYU and some other things here and there.
Brian: Now we’re going to get the fun part. This one is for Cammie, since you’re the songwriter… how many songs on this album are about ex-boyfriends?
Cammie: Oh, all but two. “Question” is a church one and “Joseph” is a church one. Love and church, what else is there, right? (laughter)
Brian: A lot of people give their instruments pet names. What have you guys named your instruments?
Cammie: Betsy!
Will: My guitar is a piece of crap that should never be played. I call it “Throw it in the Garbage”!
Cory: Mine is the Silver Pearl
Adam: I don’t even know whose the bass is!! (Laughter as Will says that his wife, Kerri is the owner of the bass). Um, “Kerri”!!
Brian: This one is an opinion question… we’ll start with Will. Listening to the radio and the current trends of modern music, what do you think about the way popular music is going?
Will: I really don’t dig it… at all. I think it’s really produced hard by businesses, and they need to sell. I really don’t like where it’s going, I think it’s getting worse and worse. I really don’t like “The” bands, with “The” in front of their names. I don’t like modern rock anymore. It's been dead since the nineties!
Brian: If you could hear a few bands on the radio more, which bands would they be?
Cory: Deftones is definitely number one, probably Korn would be my second… bands of that genre, they don’t play enough of them.
Cammie: Foo Fighters!!!
Brian: Adam, if you had to take a few bands OFF the radio, who would you get rid of?
Adam: The Used! 98 Degrees (laughter throughout)
Brian: Last question. What would you say is the message of your band, what are you trying to get out?
Cammie: We’re just trying to get some real rock going again.
Cory: We have a lot of problems with today’s society. We’re just trying to get away from some of the things that are wrong with society.

One of Descention’s singles will be aired on x96.3 FM in Salt Lake City, UT this coming Sunday between 8-10pm!! To our knowledge this will be the first radio play that our new album BiPolar has received. Please tune in at that time to witness history being made. If you are out of broadcast range, please set your web browsers to www.x96.com at that time to hear a live audio feed of the broadcast.

We have also recently hooked up with Taxi, a music industry agency. They specialize in helping bands find connections within the machine. From there we can land many of our original tunes in Movie soundtracks, TV shows, or have record companies chase us down for deals. Good things will come to pass out of our dealings with this company, so stay tuned for BiPolar tunes to hit the big scene.

Victory. Sweet Sweet Victory!! BYU campus will never be the same after the translation it received last night. The crowds kept begging for more when we tried to leave stage, so we tore Indigo into shreds. How could a crowd screaming, “GO AWAY!!” love us so much? If you missed it you will be able to catch a video clip in a week or two right here on Descention.com!

September 5th, 2003

Descention has booked the hottest gig in Utah! We achieved the unthinkable. We will be playing the Brigham Young University Fall Fling on September 12th. 120 Bands submitted material and only 12 were accepted. Descention was given the number one stage at 11:00 pm prime time! There will be over 30,000 students on campus that night and only 3 won’t stick around when we take stage. Yeah, you know who you are. Come out and help us tear campus up. It’ll be fun.

August 15th, 2003

Summer is over and so is all the hard work! We have been taking a little bit of a breather lately. The CD release was a ton of fun and we are still basking in the glory of all the beaming reviews. Most rockers love the first half and wonder why we turned wussy on the last half. The older folks wonder why we saved all the good music for the end of the CD. Yes we aim to please.

August 2nd, 2003

DONE!! FINALLY! We are officially out of the studio and now deep into the CD insert design. We’ve decided to go all out and have a 12 page booklet with all lyrics, many pictures, and lots of original artwork by Orange County Artist Bazil. His work can be seen at www.rakina.com We have our CD RELEASE PARTY for our brand new album “BIPOLAR” at Muse Music on August 7th. Doors open at 8:30pm. $5 admit charge. Many free CDs will be given away for free! Awesome, fun, la la band Sweethaven will be helping us rock the place. Good Times, Good Times. See you there!

July 16th, 2003

We’ve finally finished tracking and are well on our way to having a complete mix. Many days of tedious tweaking to preserve quality and detail have gone into this record. We’re pulling our hair out and our engineer, Rich, wishes that he never met us. Expect an announcement of our release party within a few days!

July 4th, 2003

Happy 4th! We’re taking a breather today from the Studio. Things are going well and we’ve pretty much finished all of our major tracking. Things are really starting to sound sweet! We should have it done in time for a release in early august. Thank you all for coming out to our Acoustic Performance at Muse Music. It is nice to be able to play for a crowd instead of a microphone once in a while!!

June 16, 2003

We’re back in the studio! It’s time to retire our faithful demo we recorded last summer in Orange County. We started our full length, full power, full stress album at Southzone studios in Orem, UT. We’re hoping to have something to show for our time and money in about 2 months. This summer isn’t going to be any vacation at all…..
