Descention may be misleading. We have come down, but not to Hell. We have come from heaven. We have dissented not from Good, but from the corrupt.
Will is the mastermind. Incredibly gifted with instruments, production, and management, it seemed no one could be a perfect match for his taste and style, so he created a match. In 1995, Will started forcing little sister Cammie to sing songs with him instead of letting her play with her friends. He played with various bands--The Chamber Pots, Subhuman ..... and allowed Cammie her debut singing at a rollerskating rink such female vocal wonders as “Paranoid”, “Symptoms of the Universe” and “Basket Case”.
Will and Cammie’s parents are part gypsy, so year after year, moving from town to town, Will and Cammie turned to their music for solace. They experimented, but Cammie was still young with much to learn.
One town the two ended up in was Victor, Idaho. Will started playing in a high school band, Yish. They were relatively successful. Yish played local shows and even had Cammie (now in 6th grade) sing Our Lady Peace’s “Superman’s Dead” at one show. Still, the timing was not right. Will and Cammie abruptly moved to Missouri.
Time passed, Cammie grew older, Will waited. Cammie and Will continued to play various small shows...then the turning point: Will decided to teach Cammie the guitar. This was a monumental step in the right direction! The two started their marathon jam sessions and started writing songs (Question, Forever Ed, Joseph). Still Branna, their first band, was born.
Unfortunately for Cammie, Will needed to move on. He left for college and his mission, so Cammie stayed at home, writing and practicing guitar. At BYU, Will played with and bonded with many local reigning bands including Lemongrass, Chapter Seven, Kristie Bates Band, Chump, and the Kindertones....... and even displayed his inner rapper self in the critically acclaimed G Funk Money Doggz and the Sushi Girls. Still... something was missing.
Will came home one summer in which the two recorded their first Still Branna demo, in their studio made completely of cardboard boxes in their unfinished basement. Still, he could not stay, he had to go back to school in Provo.
There he reunited with his true love but grew tired of the cold, so he took his woman, picked up, and moved to Orange County, California. There he experimented with Still Branna songs and some of his other songs. Luck struck and Cammie decided to “visit” for the summer.
The first night was magic. With the new song, Fragility, sparks flew. Descention was born! They jammed for hours every night in their rented one-room lock-out and played on the beach, ate at Norm’s, and enjoyed Cali. They recorded the first Descention demo, and Cammie was sent back home to finish the last six months of high school.
With their great initial success came their first great struggle. Since Cammie could not leave Provo, Will and Kerri moved back to join her. Here they searched and searched in the bass player famine of Utah Valley...and finally found a match three days before their first show at Muse Music. He was right in the family--sister Mary’s new husband, Adam Gray. Never having played bass in his life, they trained him in those three days on three songs for an opening show truly deserving the symbolic number of God’s approval. With its ripping success, they knew they were ready for the next step toward ultimate success--an album.
They decided upon SouthZone productions in nearby Orem. Six straight weeks of 12-16 hour days, going days with literally no sleep, living off of almost no money, Cammie having to go to the hospital three times (once for strep throat--hence, chlorospetic spray became necessary equipment)...the summer was HARD work, but produced a beautiful reward, BiPolar. An album completely written and produced by Descention.
Their CD release party was a great success...but once again came hard times. Will and Kerri needed to move back to Orange County. But Descention was not dead--Cammie continued to books shows for which Will and Kerri would drive up and sleep in their car for. Then, they booked the gig of all gigs, Fall Fling at BYU, prime time, prime stage.
This show proved our name. Having descended from heaven, hundreds of moshing fans, screaming for encore....what comes next? No one knows...but we will take over the world, one step from above and one step away from corruption at a time.
